A Timaru family is outraged after dirty fuel left them with a $6500 repair bill for their late model diesel four-wheel-drive.
Scott Mitchell was horrified when he discovered in April that his 2006 Toyota Hilux 3.0 OTD had been damaged by contaminated fuel. He first noticed something was wrong when the vehicle started making knocking sounds and the fuel injectors became noisy on start-up.
After taking it to South Canterbury Toyota and being told he faced a hefty bill due to fuel contamination, he decided to contact his fuel supplier and insurance company to seek advice.
The ute had only been fuelled up at Caltex service stations as the Mitchells had an account with the company, he said.
Mr Mitchell’s insurance company turned his claim down as his policy did not cover mechanical or electrical failure.
Chevron, which owns Caltex, initially didn’t get back to him and South Canterbury Toyota repaired the vehicle.
“I just can’t understand as it’s all documented on the fuel card.
“We will have to sell the family caravan to cover the costs,” he said

Sevens Leicester Tigers’ international centre Seru Rabeni and a team of Fijian all-stars look set to be the team to beat at Saturday’s Bath Charity Sevens Tournament at the University of Bath.
The competition has doubled in scale for 2008 with 40 teams – 32 men’s and eight women’s teams – competing on five pitches at the university.
The event is organised on an annual basis to raise money for the Bath Rugby Community Foundation, which funds a diverse range of support work in the local community.
Bath Rugby sponsors Wilts Electrical Wholesalers have pledged prize money for the winning team and support has also come from Blackthorn cider, Havaianas flip-flops and The Bath Chronicle, who is sponsoring the referees.
This year, a glittering cast of current international and Guinness Premiership players will be in action, headed up by Rabeni’s team of south sea islanders, the Kaviti Crusaders.
Among the other teams entered are the RBS Royals, who draw their squad from Hartpury College, Newbury Blues, the Prowling Pretenders from Richmond and the Carmarthen Warriors.
Admission is free with a barbeque and bar open all day.
The on-pitch action starts at 10am with round-robin pool matches with the finals scheduled for 5pm.

Grannies ride out in aid of hospital unit

ADVENTUROUS leather-clad grannies took a chance to recapture their youth as they rode pillion on a convoy of Honda Goldwing bikes.
Forty-nine grannies and one granny-to-be entered this year’s charity bike ride, taking participants from Chelmsford to West Mersea and back, to raise vital cash for the special care baby unit at St John’s Hospital.
Yvonne Cooper, 73, said: “It’s the first time I have taken part. I have wanted to do it for several years now, but this is the first year I was lucky enough to get a place.
Experience “I used to have a Triumph in my youth, so I was keen to relive the experience and raise money for charity at the same time.”
Biker Pete Fisher, 50, a member of Kent Gold Wings, said: “We like to do the event, and also do the ones more local to us. It is just a good day out.”
Leading the charge was Gordon Wren of the Essex Wings and great- granny Pam Merrick, 75.
Pam said: “My grandchildren are meeting us at Mersea, I am really excited to be with Flash Gordon, I love it out there.”
Yvonne Carter, charity support officer for Mid Essex, and John Hall were in charge of the event.
She said: “We have stuck with the neonatal unit although the first year it was in aid of another hospital treatment, presumably because someone had been treated here.
“They changed it the second year to the babies and it has stayed the same, I think there is something quite nice about big bikers and tiny babies.
“With the special care unit from St John’s Hospital moving to Broomfield it will allow a further six cots to the current 14 available.
“Fundraising will go a long way to equip the new facility with advanced medical equipment to help even more special care babies.”
The event which last year raised Pounds 15,000 will assist the special care baby unit, which currently assists more than 4,000 babies who are born critically ill, prematurely and low weight.

Once upon a lunchtime, Saint and Greavsie were more than just a prematch fix on a Saturday. They were the only double act who were actually funnier than their Spitting Image puppets.
When Jimmy Greaves was confined to bed by illness, producers at On The Ball drafted in his latex caricature as Ian St John’s sidekick in the studio.
“I wouldn’t have minded, but when the bill came in from Spitting Image, the puppet cost more than me,” says Greaves in that laconic delivery which still sounds like your favourite taxi driver.
“Some people couldn’t hack it when they appeared on Spitting Image, but Saint and I thought it was a great compliment to be on the same programme as the Prime Minister and the Royal family.
“The Queen sent me a nice letter saying what an honour it was to appear on the box with us.
“When the puppets were sold at auction, I tried to buy ours – but I stopped bidding when the price for mine alone went beyond pounds 2,500, and they had lost the one of Saint.
“More than five grand for a pair of puppets? You can get two Cup Final tickets cheaper than that.”
After 17 years, Saint and Greavsie return to our screens today in a threepart Cup Final special on Setanta Sports.

DEARBORN, Mich. — For the first time, an American automaker plans to sell a hybrid car for the same, lower price as its gas- powered counterpart, removing at least one obstacle for drivers who want a greener ride.
At a little more than $35,000, the 2011 Lincoln MKZ sedan won’t be cheap, but the decision by Ford to match the prices of the two styles could lead competitors to follow suit with future models.
The hybrid MKZ, debuting this fall and running on both gas and electric power, will be a bargain after factoring in savings at the pump. It gets more than double the mileage of the traditional version in city driving.
While automakers won’t reveal what they spend to install a hybrid system in a car, the final product usually costs several thousand dollars more than a gas-powered version of the same car.
The Lexus HS 250h, the MKZ’s closest competitor, costs about $2,500 more than the Lexus IS, a similar, small, gas-powered sedan. Ford charges $8,840 more for the hybrid version of its Ford Escape SUV.
The MKZ can still make money, even if Lincoln doesn’t charge more for the hybrid, said Erich Merkle, president of the consulting company Autoconomy.com. Luxury cars are sold at a significant premium, he said, ensuring a profit for Ford.
Lincoln can also borrow the hybrid system from the Ford Fusion, its corporate twin, and save on development costs.
“Conventional wisdom is that the hybrid should be priced higher, but there’s not really anything to say that a hybrid has to command a higher price,” Merkle said.
